Bicycle friendly cattle grid – Brisbane Valley Rail Trail

Posted by on Jun 25, 2018

Mike Maher of Transplan Pty Ltd designed a bicycle-friendly cattle grid for use at ‘stock crossing’ points on the Busselton to Flinders Bay Rail Trail (in the south west of Western Australia). The idea is to enable cyclists to pass straight through a ‘stock crossing’ point on a rail trail without having to stop to open and close gates. The design of the grid itself should deter stock from entering the rail trail corridor. The first photo below is one example of use on the rail trail just south of Margaret River (on what is now called the Wardandi Track). Stock have access across the rail trail corridor 24/7 and cyclists can pass through without stopping to open/close gates. The second photo below is a similar bicycle-friendly grid recently installed at a road crossing on the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail.
